Mostly it's using the tablet, because that allows for pressure-sensitive things like size and opacity of the brush. The principle is, you have your line drawing on the top layer on Multiply blend mode, and then the layers below it are color. B is the shortcut for the brush tool and I is the shortcut for the eyedropper tool. If you paint two different colors and then want to make a gradient between them (say blue to yellow), you take one of the colors, make the brush opacity about 10-30 percent, and then just keep painting on the border between the two solid colors to blend them. If you need to blend a little more finely, you use the eyedropper tool and select a color that is closer to the area you are trying to blend. If you're around this summer I'll show you, it might be a little easier to see than to read about!
